Chapter 1
The Wedding Is Canceled
Genevieve Swan:
Everybody said I would never find a mate, and then I was mated to four mates who I had to tame.
….
"It's our wedding night. He'll want to take my virginity," I uttered.
"Then you'll have to tell him I advised against it. Not until the time is right."
Monique, our pack's seer and my caretaker, said as she adjusted my veil while I gazed at my reflection in the mirror.
A cub without a wolf wasn't supposed to find a mate, yet today I was getting married to my childhood friend, Alpha Ron.
When he asked me to become his chosen mate, I accepted without hesitation.
"Just remember, you're not supposed to take the pendant off your neck," Monique reminded me, touching the pendant resting against my skin. "If you do, you'll transition, and that will be bad for your health."
My wolf was extremely sick and weak, and I had been told that if I ever transitioned, her illness would affect me as well.
That was why Monique had helped seal her behind a wall inside me.
"And you'll still listen to me even after you get married," she added with a sweet smile. "Remember, I'm not only a seer. I'm your well-wisher."
Her words reminded me that when I lost my mother as a baby, Monique stepped in and became the one who cared for me.
Not that I could ever deny her or my father's orders.
My father was Senova's only Alpha King.
There were no other Alpha Kings in the world, and his word carried absolute authority.
My father believed that harsh punishment was the only way to make me stronger, but he made sure those lessons remained behind the walls of the mansion.
The only witnesses were the royal beta's family.
The royal beta was my father's brother, and his daughter, Kit, had always been my best friend.
She was also my bridesmaid.
"I'll check on the preparations, and then you can walk down the aisle with your father," she brushed her hair back and left the room.
Somehow, I had been feeling anxious when I should have been happy.
This was supposed to be one of the most important day of my life.
Hoping the sight would settle my nerves, I retreated to my room, the largest bedroom in the mansion, where the wedding-night decorations awaited me.
The moment I stepped inside, dread settled in my stomach.
Red droplets stained the white sheets prepared for me and my mate.
Ron was an Alpha, but after our marriage, he would be living in my mansion.
Marrying the Alpha King's daughter came with privileges.
If those stains meant what I thought they did, then someone had sex on the bed meant for the bride and groom.
Before I could call for anyone, voices drifted from the bathroom.
"Oh, Alpha Ron, have some mercy," a woman moaned. "You already took my virginity. Are you going to tear me open with your dick?"
My entire body shuddered.
The words shattered my world.
Without thinking, I rushed to the bathroom door and pounded on it.
The voices stopped instantly.
So did the shower.
The door swung open, revealing a shirtless Ron hastily fastening his pants.
Water dripped from his hair and ran down his bare chest.
"Who is— with y–you?" I asked, stumbling over the words as tears burned my throat.
"No one," he grunted.
The irritation in his voice made it sound as though I was the one inconveniencing him.
"How could you do this to me? It's our wedding day."
The tears came instantly.
There was nothing left to question.
I knew exactly what had happened.
He had taken another woman's virginity on the very bed where we were supposed to spend our wedding night.
"Go back to your room, fix your makeup, and I'll meet you at the aisle."
His indifference hit harder than the betrayal.
He didn't look ashamed.
He didn't even try to deny it.
"Who's in there?"
I tried to push past him, but he caught my arm and shoved me backward.
I hit the floor hard enough to let out a yelp.
He had never treated me like this before.
All those years of friendship.
All those kind words. Has any of it been real?
"Who is with you?" I screamed.
Yet he stayed planted in the doorway, shielding whoever was inside.
The realization hurt more than the shove.
He cared more about the woman behind that door than he did about me.
"What is going on here?"
My aunt, Mrs. Browning, the royal beta's wife, rushed over the moment she heard the commotion.
The instant she saw my tear-streaked face, she turned to Ron.
"What did you do?"
"He has a girl in there," I cried, pointing at him. "He already took her virginity on our bed."
Mrs. Browning shoved him aside and stormed toward the bathroom but then she stopped.
"Mom?"
The soft voice drifting from inside stole the air from my lungs.
My whole world collapsed.
"Is it Kit?"
I rubbed my eyes, hoping I had heard wrong.
I hadn't.
Mrs. Browning's face changed the moment she saw her daughter standing inside the bathroom.
Before I could reach her, Ron stepped in front of me.
Kit hurried to get dressed while her mother escorted her out.
As she walked past me, a slight smirk played on her lips.
That was when I realized she had never truly considered me family.
"Fucking get out of my way!" I screamed but Ron wouldn't move.
Even now, he was protecting her.
Then my father arrived. He must have heard the shouting.
I told him everything.
Every last detail.
The worst part was that he didn't seem angry that Ron had betrayed me.
He seemed more offended that someone had disrespected the Alpha King's authority.
"I thought I could trust you," my father thundered.
"Then you should have been truthful with me," Ron shot back. "Especially when you weren't planning to give me anything in return."
There it was.
The truth.
Even though he kept his tone respectful enough to avoid openly challenging the Alpha King, his real motives were finally on display.
It had always been about power.
"I just found out I won't become the Alpha King even if I marry her. I won't even get to fuck her. So why the fuck would I marry her? She's useless to me. And on top of that, I'd become a laughingstock for marrying a worthless creature who gives me no benefits."
Every word felt like a knife twisting deeper into my chest.
My best friend had never wanted me.
And now that he knew he couldn't have them, he no longer saw any reason to pretend.
My father's fists tightened at his sides.
Disbelief flashed across his face as he slowly shook his head.
Then Monique rushed into the room, clutching her chest.
"I just had a vision," she announced, hope shining in her eyes.
"This wedding being cancelled is a blessing," Monique continued. "We were wrong. Genevieve isn't meant for one man. She's destined to marry four powerful werewolves. Four men who will protect her and keep her safe. The Moon Goddess has chosen four mates for her."
The room fell silent.
A seer's vision wasn't something people ignored.
My father's face brightened immediately.
Ron, on the other hand, looked sick.
As though someone had punched him in the stomach.
"And you thought nobody would want her if you didn't marry her," my father said with a mocking laugh.
Then he turned to Monique.
"Prepare Genevieve. We will host a competition. The four strongest men will compete for her hand."
I couldn't even keep one man.
Now I was expected to marry four.
