Chapter 1

The Uncertained Morning

Olivia's POV

Standing before the mirror, I studied my reflection. My cheeks were slightly flushed, giving my face a soft, youthful look. My body curved in ways that did not fit the slim, toned ideal my family worshipped. My hips were full, my stomach soft, and my thighs brushed together when I shifted my weight.

Every part of me reminded me of how I failed to fit the pack’s narrow idea of beauty.

I tied my golden hair into a neat bun and slipped into a long skirt and a simple, worn-out shirt. Not exactly the outfit of someone excited about a mating ceremony. But I had learned long ago not to expect much. I dressed the way I always did—like someone bracing herself for disappointment.

“Olivia, where are you? Get your fat self down this moment!” my mother yelled at the top of her voice from the dining room. I let out a defeated smile before rushing out of my room, almost stumbling on the way. I walked downstairs to the dining room where my supposed family was already seated.

Seated beside my mom was Sophia, my kid sister—my family’s priceless jewel and the pack’s famous diva. My father sat at the head of the table, as usual, his face set in stone like a statue, while my mother sat proudly at his side.

“So fat and still lazy,” Sophia mocked, but I ignored her and sat at the end of the table.

“You should consider skipping meals and exercising,” my mother said, sipping her coffee. “Maybe then you’ll lose some of that excess fat.”

Sophia chuckled softly. “As if that would help.”

“At least she should try,” my mother continued. “Instead of eating all the time and lazing around.

Turning to face Sophia, she dropped her cup of coffee and held her hands. “If she could be half as good as you, I wouldn’t have any worries. But thank God I have you,” she added, her face full of joy and smiles.

“Sophia smirked. “She can only dream of being half as good as me. Even an inch of confidence would make her unbearable around the pack.”

My supposed strong heart ached at their cruel words. There was a special kind of pain that came from being ridiculed by your own family. I swallowed it down and quietly placed a pancake and toast on my plate.

“The mating ceremony is in a few hours, and I hope you don’t embarrass me in front of the whole pack,” my father stated, looking at me for the first time since I came down.

His face was still ice cold with a slight frown as he addressed me. Turning to face Sophia, he smiled. “I believe you will make me proud and be the next Luna of this pack when you finally mate with your boyfriend, Damien,” he said.

Sophia smiled shyly. “Daddy, stop. Damien and I are just friends.”

But her body language said otherwise.

“Don’t mind her. I know that she and Damien would make a great wolf couple,” my mom added, her face beaming with smiles and pride.

I looked into her eyes and saw the massive love and tender care of a mother—one that had never been expressed toward me. If only they could just treat me like a normal human, I would be content.

“If you’re not going to eat, then leave. Stop playing with the food,” my father’s cold voice snapped me out of my thoughts.

Holding back my tears, I took another bite of pancake. When I could no longer force myself to eat, I stood up and tried to leave the table, but Father called me back.

“Make sure you are well dressed for the ceremony. We leave after dinner,” Father spat, his tone laced with irritation.

But before I could respond, Mother scoffed. “Oh, let her be, darling. I don’t see any need for that. I don’t think she’ll be mated to anyone, and even if she is, I believe he’ll reject her. So, to avoid her embarrassing our family, I’d advise we don’t bother about her.” Mother mocked, and the tears I had been holding back came rolling down my cheeks.

“Aww, is my sister crying? So touching,” Sophia mocked. “Please don’t ever mention to anyone that you’re my sister, let alone from this family. I don’t think we produce fat pigs,” she added with a mischievous grin on her face.

Not being able to stand their taunts, I left the dining room and stormed up to my room. Inside my room, I fell to the ground, resting my back against the wall, and pulled my knees toward my chest. Uncontrollable tears rolled down my cheeks as my whole body shook with pain. I thought I could take any insult, I thought I was strong and could withstand any blow or pain, but coming from my family—the one group of people who were supposed to love and protect me—was something I couldn’t take.

“It’s okay. Take a grip of yourself. We have to be at the mating ceremony. We are running out of time,” my wolf spoke.

I glanced at the clock. One hour left.

“I have a good feeling about the mating ceremony,” my wolf, Lucy, said confidently in my mind.

“Are you really sure?” I asked, skeptical, while wiping my face with the back of my palm.

“Yes, I sense that the Moon Goddess has something special in store for us—a stroke of good fortune.”

A small smile crept onto my face at the thought. The mating ceremony only happened every five years. All wolves who had reached the age of maturity—eighteen or older—would participate in a ritual to connect with their destined mates if they were present.

I was anxious, doubtful, and terrified. What if I didn’t have a mate? Or worse, what if my mate rejected me the second he saw me? What if my mate was a rogue? What if my mate was a sinister person?

“Stop doubting yourself, Olivia. Anyone would be lucky to have you,” Lucy scolded me gently, but I scoffed. She was only trying to make me feel better, and I can’t say it was really working.

“Get up, Olivia. We need to go,” my wolf urged.

Reluctantly, I pulled myself up, wiping away the last remnants of tears on my face as I moved toward the wardrobe. I wasn’t in the mood to dress up, but Lucy’s words kept replaying in my head—the Moon Goddess has something special in store for us. Despite the heavy weight in my chest, I wanted to believe her, just this once.

I pulled out a simple flowing white dress—one that wasn’t too tight or too revealing. It covered my curves in a modest way, flowing down to my knees. After slipping it on, I glanced in the mirror again. My swollen eyes stared back at me, but I had to push through despite all odds. I quickly applied some light makeup to cover the evidence of my tears, brushed my hair back into a neat bun, and took a deep breath.

This is it. No matter what happens today, you’ll be okay. I will confront everything that comes my way with ease and a clear mind, I told myself, trying to steel my nerves and emotions.

I descended the stairs; the house was eerily quiet. My parents and Sophia were gone. I wasn’t surprised. They probably left without bothering to tell me, and my mom would probably wish I didn’t show up to embarrass her among her few friends who knew of my existence. That was how it had always been—like I didn’t even exist to them.

I grabbed my small bag and stepped out of the house, feeling the cool evening breeze hit my skin, making me shiver a little. The path to the ceremony grounds wasn’t far, so I decided to walk. Each step felt heavy, but I kept reminding myself that this ceremony would change nothing, and I would keep being strong for myself.

Chapter 2

The Mating Ceremony

Olivia's POV

As I approached the field where the mating ceremony was to take place, I saw groups of wolves already gathered—some were my age, while some were younger or older. There was excitement in the air, the kind that came with the possibility of finding a mate. People were in groups laughing, talking, and I could even hear some whispers about who might end up with whom. I kept my head down, trying to blend in unnoticed.

“Don’t be nervous, Olivia,” Lucy reassured me. “Your moment is coming, and I will always be here with you.”

I stood off to the side, watching the ceremony begin. My heart clenched as I noticed Sophia by Damien’s side, looking radiant and full of confidence. She was already glowing with anticipation, sure that the night would end with her as Damien’s mate and future Luna of our pack. I couldn’t help but wonder if she was right. She always got the best bargain of everything. The two seemed to be so much in love, and sometimes I envied her. I wished someone would love me just as much as Damien and my parents loved her.

This was Sophia’s and my first mating ceremony, but it was Damien’s second. The first one was when he was eighteen, but unfortunately, he didn’t find his mate. Obviously, his mate wasn’t of age yet or was not in the pack. I was only fifteen then, and Sophia was thirteen, so neither of us could participate. But now Damien is twenty-three, I’m twenty, and Sophia is eighteen, so Damien is certain that Sophia is his mate.

I moved my gaze away from Damien and Sophia, then saw my parents conversing with Alpha Lucas and his wife, Luna Amelia, as if they were going to be in-laws soon. I could see the bright smile and joy on my mother’s face as she kept staring at Sophia and Damien with pride, but when she noticed me, she frowned, looked at me with disgust, and looked away hurriedly. My heart sank, but I was already used to it.

"Attention, everyone,” Alpha Lucas’s voice thundered across the field. “The mating ceremony is about to begin. I need absolute silence.”

My stomach twisted with anxiety and fear as I stood frozen in place.

“All unmated wolves of mature age,” he continued, “step forward.”

I hesitated for a moment, feeling nervous and scared, but Lucy pushed me forward. Reluctantly, I joined the other unmated females, standing across from the males. My eyes found Sophia again, standing directly across from Damien. Of course, she would be, and it seemed other unmated wolves deliberately gave the two of them space—a silent acknowledgment of their union.

The priestess stepped forward, her long robe trailing behind her. Without greeting, she lifted her hands and fixed her eyes on the sky. Her voice was calm and soft but carried a command that made everyone still.

“With the full moon as witness today, we call upon our great mother, the Moon Goddess, to bless us and let the fated mates be revealed. A magical rope will lead and bind those destined for each other. If they accept each other, then their hearts and souls shall be linked forever. If your mate is here, the rope will appear on your waist in the same color, guiding you to them.”

She began to chant words I could not understand. The air tightened around us—charged and cold—and the crowd watched their own waistlines as if expecting miracles. My heart thudded so loud I could feel it in my throat—a tiny, frantic drum. Panic fluttered under my ribs. What if nothing happened? What if I didn’t have a mate?

Then, a prickling cold skated across my skin at the waist. I looked down. There it was: a thin, gold thread, gleaming like a sliver of dawn against my dress. It hummed with a gentle pull, stretching forward as if tugging at the very thread of my fate.

For a long second, I only stared. The cord quivered at the crowd’s hush. My breath caught. Lucy pushed at the back of my mind—a nudge, a warm insistence.

“Go,” she urged.

I moved, my legs wobbling. The gold cord threaded through bodies and shadows, slipping past laughing groups and whispering pairs, always pulling. Others followed similarly glowing ropes, some already linked to their mates. The crowd became a maze of light and longing; each step I took made the moon seem closer, brighter.

Halfway through, my pulse steadied into a painful, hopeful rhythm. The cord led me toward the center of the field, and suddenly the world narrowed to only the golden line and the path it carved.

I stopped short. Breath lodged in my chest.

He stood there.

Alpha Kingsley—older brother to Alpha Lucas, the man the pack kept in low-voiced rumors. He was taller than I remembered, and his presence felt like a winter wind: sharp, undeniable. His eyes met mine and widened, the cord between us shining with a blinding gold that made the whole space around us sparkle.

For a moment, everything dissolved: the murmurs, the chanting, even my own fear. All that remained was the thread, and him, and the dizzy, unnameable pull closing the distance in a quiet, relentless tug.

My legs moved before my mind could tell them not to. The golden thread led me the rest of the way, and as our cords braided together, a light flared—brief and pure—and then I saw his face close enough to read the small shock and something else I could not yet name. My world thinned to the brightness of that light and the sound of my own breathing.

I couldn’t tell if my hands trembled from fear or from a strange, cautious hope. Either way, there was no going back now.

“Mate!” Lucy howled inside my head, fierce and wild.

Chapter 3

The Rejection

Olivia's POV

“Mate,” Lucy howled inside my head, fierce and wild. The golden cord binding me was also binding Alpha Kingsley with a strong magnetic pull, drawing us closer to each other at an uncomfortable distance. I felt my heart pounding in my chest like it wanted to break free and run away.

“This can’t be,” I whispered to myself. “Haven’t I suffered enough? Or is the Moon Goddess playing a prank on me?” I asked myself again, my throat tightening. Of all the males present, why must it be him? I was already prepared for not being able to find a mate, but who could have warned me or prepared me for this kind of situation? My hands were shaking slightly, and I folded them behind me so no one would notice.

“How can this be?” Alpha Kingsley scoffed. “You… my mate?” A dark, mocking grin spread across his face. His eyes roamed over me slowly, cruelly, like he was looking at something unbelievable—something wrong. “Is the Moon Goddess bored?” he continued coldly. “Or does she need entertainment?”

The words hit me hard.

“To think that you would be bound to me,” he said with a short laugh. “For years, I never wanted a mate. I never even dreamed of one. And now fate gives me this.” He gestured vaguely in my direction, as if I were nothing more than an inconvenience.

His gaze hardened as it met mine—sharp, filled with pure dislike. “There is nothing about you I want,” he said flatly. “Nothing.”

The hatred in his eyes was impossible to miss. It was clear. Open. Undeniable.

And in that moment, I understood something painful.

He didn’t just reject the bond. He despised the idea of me.

“I don’t accept this union. Proceed with the rejection process,” he said to the priestess, his face cold as ice.

“Are you sure you want to reject her? You must think carefully about the consequences,” she warned, turning to look at me expressionlessly. Her voice held no pity.

I was full of shame, anger, hurt, betrayal, and fear. Was I that bad? Or was I just destined to never find happiness? My cheeks burned, and I could feel the judgmental stares around me like needles poking into my skin.

“I accept,” I voiced softly, my mind still bewildered by everything. A part of me was relieved that I didn’t have to face any more ridicule or hurt from a mate who didn’t want me, but another part of me felt sad. Well, this is how it was always meant to be, I thought bitterly. Alone. Lonely.

After all, who would want a fat pig?

Sophia’s mocking voice echoed cruelly in my head.

“Wait. I, Alpha Kingsley of the Ancient Blue Moon Pack, accept you as my mate.”

Immediately, a blinding light shone from the cord holding us. It rotated around us and went into our foreheads. The mate bond snapped into place, and I felt a strange connection with him—something heavy, cold, and unfamiliar. My breath caught in my throat.

“Why?” I asked, barely able to speak. My voice trembled. Why the sudden change of mind? Or did he want to suck my blood, just as the rumors said? Did he think I would have more blood or taste better because of my size? I shuddered at the mere thought, a chill running through my body. I wrapped my arms around myself, feeling exposed.

I was still lost in thought when a hand suddenly grabbed me and pulled me away. I almost stumbled as his grip was strong and rough.

Looking up, I noticed that I was being led away by Alpha Kingsley—now my mate—to a distance away from the questioning and mocking stares of the crowd. Their whispers still followed us.

“Why did you change your mind? I don’t think I can be good enough for you,” I stuttered. My voice cracked halfway, and embarrassment washed over me.

“Good. You know your place. And don’t get any funny ideas in that head of yours. I only accepted you because I’m running for the Lycan chairman position and don’t want to be weakened by a useless, broken mate bond,” he replied sarcastically.

His words were sharp, thrown straight at me like daggers. His face showed no sign of regret—not even a small one.

I had never felt so afraid and humiliated in my life. My chest tightened painfully. “I don’t think I can play this game with you. Can you please just reject me?” I barely spoke, my legs already shaking from our close distance. I didn’t want to look him in the eye, so I stared at the ground.

Immediately, a chilling sensation washed over my body. I turned to face him, and his gaze was dark and ruthless—the kind of look that made the air around us feel colder.

“I don’t like being rejected, questioned, or challenged. I will count this as a slip-up. Don’t test my patience. We leave in three days,” he commanded, then turned around. With one hand resting behind him on his hip, he walked away with a strange, majestic confidence, oozing arrogance and danger.

I watched him move like he owned every step he took. People shifted out of his way without him saying a word. Even his back looked intimidating. Everything about him screamed power and authority.

I stood there, transfixed and still confused. My heart felt heavy, like something was pressing down on it. I wrapped my arms around myself again, trying to hold myself together.

“My life is going to be anything but peaceful,” I whispered to no one in particular.

My legs finally regained feeling, and I slowly walked away from the area, each step heavier than the last. The whispers followed behind me, but I tried to block them out. I didn’t know whether to cry, scream, or laugh at the cruelty of fate.

All I knew was that nothing about my life would ever remain the same again.

Chapter 4

Escape

Olivia’s POV

Getting home was harder than I expected.

The road felt longer than it ever had, stretching endlessly before me. Each step was slow and painful, like I had hundreds of kilos of iron chained to my legs, dragging me down.

My feet ached, but the pain in my chest hurt far more. Every breath felt heavy. My thoughts were loud, messy, and cruel, replaying everything that had happened over and over again.

I wanted to stop walking.

I wanted to sit down and disappear.

But I kept moving.

I struggled to drag my weakened body home—at least to my pillow and bed, which were already used to soaking up my tears. My life had always been a tragedy, and I had learned to expect nothing, but I couldn't explain how or why I felt this way.

On getting home, my parents and Sophia were already there, celebrating her bonding with the Alpha’s heir, their dream son-in-law.

“Look who we have here, my precious sister Olivia,” Sophia taunted.

“I heard you’re fated to the cursed Alpha. Congratulations, sweetie. If the Moon Goddess doesn’t want your fat self alive,” she mocked.

I just stood there, speechless and exhausted—already drained from the entire ordeal of today.

“Well, at least she got someone, even if it’s a cursed Alpha who preys on and sucks people’s blood,” my mom replied coldly.

“I heard he’s very ruthless and kills without batting an eye. Rumor has it he eats human flesh,” Sophia added.

I turned to face the people I called family—people who shared the same blood as me—and all I could see was their contempt and ridicule. Not a single trace of concern for my plight.

I looked at my father. His face was still ice-cold, expression unreadable. Was he concerned about me? Never. In his eyes, I could never be seen as human, talk more of being his daughter.

I couldn’t help it as tears flowed down my cheeks, dripping onto my chest. I had taught myself not to bother about their words, yet my heart still bled every time.

I couldn’t stand it anymore. I ran to my room, went in, and slammed the door shut. I fell to the ground and wept profusely.

Maybe I should just vanish… or escape to a far place where no one could find me. The thought appeared again.

“Don’t do anything stupid,” Lucy howled inside my head. “Everything is going to be fine,” she said, but I doubted it. I was already thinking of running away.

“I don’t think I can survive being mated to that ruthless Alpha,” I whispered into the empty room. “I can barely survive my own family. How am I supposed to live with him?”

My chest tightened as fear crawled up my spine.

“I wouldn’t even know how I died,” I added softly.

The thought alone made my hands shake.

I forced myself to stand and pulled out my worn-out traveling bag from under the bed. There wasn’t much to pack—just a few clothes, an old earring, and a small pearl I had once received from my late grandmother. I held the pearl for a moment, rubbing my thumb over its smooth surface, letting the memory of her gentle smile steady me.

That was all I had.

I zipped the bag shut, changed into fresh clothes, and tied my hair back into a simple ponytail. My hands moved on their own, numb and steady, as if my body had already accepted what my heart was still struggling to understand.

I took one last look around the room.

The bed where I had cried myself to sleep.

The walls that had heard my whispered prayers.

The space that had held me for eighteen years—my only place of quiet and safety.

My throat tightened.

Then I turned away.

I slipped out of the room and moved carefully through the house, each step slow and silent. I held my breath as I reached the door, terrified someone might wake and stop me.

No one did.

Outside, the night air wrapped around me as I closed the door behind me. I didn’t look back.

My wolf whispered urgently inside my mind, telling me I was making a mistake. She begged me to trust the Moon Goddess, to believe that fate had a reason.

I shut her out.

My decision was already made.

I was leaving this place—this house, this pack, this life that had only ever brought me pain.

I had no clear plan. I didn’t know the roads. I didn’t even know how far I could go. I had been kept inside most of my life, allowed out only for important pack events.

But I remembered an old map I had once seen—faded and torn—that showed a rough path leading away from the pack’s borders.

Toward the human world.

Yes… the human world.

A place where no one knew me.

A place where no one would judge me.

A place where no one would find me.

Chapter 5

Futile Escape

Olivia’s POV

As I walked through the unknown parts of the forest, I could hear strange noises and sounds all around me. I braced myself and continued.

I began thinking about the rumors I had heard in the pack—rogues, witches, and vampires who killed and feasted on flesh and blood. Some victims were even used for black magic. Fear overwhelmed me, dread crawled up my spine, but I refused to back down. It was now or never.

As I walked deeper into the forest, the noises in the bushes grew louder and seemed to be approaching fast. I thought I heard footsteps—or maybe it was just fear playing tricks on my head.

I quickened my steps, almost running, and then suddenly I saw it—a black shadow moved. Immediately I knew I was in danger. I tried running with all my strength, but it wasn’t enough.

Within seconds, I was surrounded… not by one, but three rogues.

“Why stop?” one of them laughed loudly. “I’m enjoying the chase.”

Another voice joined in, rough and cruel. “I like playing with my prey before I eat them.”

My heart slammed painfully against my ribs as my legs burned. I could hear them behind me—too close. Too fast.

“I’ll go first,” a third voice said eagerly. “I want a taste before you all ruin her.”

He laughed darkly. “We agreed last time—first catch gets first bite. And even though she’s fat and ugly…” he paused, inhaling deeply, “… I can still smell it. Virgin. Fresh.”

He licked his lips loudly.

My stomach twisted violently.

“Please,” I cried, my voice breaking as tears streamed down my face. “Please don’t hurt me. I’ll give you everything I have. My bag—my money—anything. Just let me go.”

My feet stumbled, but fear forced me forward.

“Well, well,” one of them mocked. “What do we have here?”

“An ugly damsel in distress,” another said, bursting into laughter.

Their laughter echoed in my ears, cruel and sharp, tearing into what little courage I had left.

Was this really how my life would end?

Why is my life full of misfortune?

No. I wouldn’t allow them to humiliate me. I would rather die than let them have their way with me.

With newfound determination, I stood up and grabbed a stick beside me.

“Don’t come any closer!” I shouted.

“Hahaha,” they laughed. “Looks like we have a fiery kitten. Well, that makes it more interesting.”

One of them moved toward me. I stepped back, and with sudden force, I swung the stick at him, hitting him between his legs.

His scream snapped the others out of their fun. One lunged at me, knocking the stick away. A stinging slap sent me crashing to the ground.

“Enough with the games. You two hold her down while I go first. After that, you can follow. We don’t want to draw attention here,” their leader commanded while loosening his belt.

The other two pinned me down, their claws digging into my arms. Blood began to drip. There was no way I could escape their hold.

Was this my demise—to be assaulted and killed by rogues?

Maybe in my next life I will be born with luck and good fortune, I whispered softly as I closed my eyes, resigned to my fate.

Then suddenly, a voice thundered:

“Let her go. And don’t dare touch her.”

My eyes were blurry with tears, but I knew that voice.

A thunderous roar ripped through the forest, so loud it shook the ground beneath my feet.

The air changed instantly.

Before I could even turn fully, a massive black wolf appeared between me and the rogues. He was enormous—larger than any wolf I had ever seen. His fur was dark as night, streaked with deep crimson like dried blood, and his claws gleamed gold under the moonlight, sharp and deadly.

Power rolled off him in crushing waves.

I barely had time to breathe.

There was a blur of movement—too fast for my eyes to follow.

Something wet hit the ground.

A body collapsed.

Headless.

My breath caught painfully in my throat as I realized it was the leader—the one who had been seconds away from hurting me. His body twitched once… then lay still.

The other two rogues screamed in terror.

They turned and ran.

They didn’t get far.

Shadows flashed. A low snarl cut through the air. Then—two heavy thuds.

Both bodies hit the ground, lifeless and broken, the forest falling silent once more.

It was over.

Just like that.

I stood frozen, unable to move, unable to speak. My mind struggled to catch up with what my eyes had just seen. Everything had happened too fast. I hadn’t even seen how he killed them.

Only that he had.

The massive wolf turned slowly.

His burning gaze locked onto me.

Those eyes—filled with fury, wrath, and something darker—pinned me in place.

My knees weakened as he stepped closer, each movement powerful and controlled.

“Why did you disobey me?” he growled, his voice deep and terrifying, vibrating through my bones.

Fear and relief crashed into me at once.

Inside my head, Lucy screamed,

“MATE!”

The word slammed into my mind with violent force, sharp and overwhelming. Pain ripped through my skull as I stumbled backward, terror gripping every part of me. My legs trembled violently beneath my weight, barely able to hold me upright.

In that moment, everything that had happened that night crashed down on me all at once—the rejection, the humiliation, the fear. My chest tightened as my breathing grew shallow.

Was he going to kill me too?

The thought crept through my mind, fragile and desperate, barely formed before panic swallowed it whole.

My vision blurred.

Darkness slowly crept in from the edges, stealing the world away piece by piece. I could no longer feel the ground beneath my feet as the last of my strength gave out.

The final sensation I registered was the cold night air rushing past me as I fell into unconsciousness.
