Chapter 1

Just A Stand-in

Rue's POV

The banquet hall was filled with light music, laughter and occasional clinking of glasses. I lingered outside Half Moon Pack’s banquet hall, hesitating whether to go in or not.

The reason why I had personally come here was to ask Aiden-my chosen mate and husband for three years, to come home and spend some time with our three-year old daughter, Iris.

It was our daughter’s birthday and in an unfortunate addition to the event, she was seriously ill, and too weak to leave her bed. Had it been any other situation, I wouldn’t have resorted to looking for Aiden physically.

The doctors had already told me that the wolf venom in her system was critical. And if she was to survive the surgery, it would take a miracle.

My daughter’s wish was to have Aiden spend time with her on her birthday.

That’s why I made it my mission to look for Aiden personally.

I started to open the door, but before I made it all the way through, I spotted Aiden in the company of another lady nearby.

They didn't happen to notice me as they were so engrossed in their conversation.

Haven wasn’t just one of Aiden’s closest friends - she was his fated mate, though neither of them had known it when I first arrived.

Their bond has always been effortless in a way that made me uneasy before the truth even came out.

Now, seeing her stand so provocatively close to him, her fingers brushing his arms with a comfortable ease, twisted something in me.

Aiden didn’t even flinch at their proximity, his body even leaned in like a chess puzzle fitting another.

The realization hit me; she belonged to him in ways I never could.

I felt a sharp pang of betrayal -like a needle driven straight in my heart.

“It still baffles me why you decided to settle with an…omega. You clearly had better options. You still have.” Haven flirtily tilted her head to the side, in a way that could make a grown man crumble.

With my curiosity building up, I found myself eager to hear my husband’s response to that.

“ Sometimes I always wonder if the only reason I married her was because she kind of looks like you.” He responded in a warm tone. “But hey, she gave me a daughter. That’s one of the reasons I can’t get up and decide to push her away.”

I clenched my teeth so hard to prevent myself from crying, as I took in shallow gasps of air.

My wolf whimpered inside me, her presence threatening to break through.

“Do you even think she loves you?” the lady Haven asked. “ Or you were just her convenient choice because she is an omega and I don’t know, maybe use you as a ladder.”

Almost immediately, Aiden replied “I have never thought of that. She loves me though, I am almost positive. But…”

“But what? You don’t love her?” Haven cut him off. Aiden neither confirmed nor denied, he just remained speechless and that hurt me more.

I felt wounded, worthless.

I wasn’t just some random omega. I was Rue Hawthorne, the daughter of Alpha Cyrus, the leader of the oldest and rarest pack, Blood Claw Pack. My pack was one of the fiercest and politically powerful to ever exist.

I had given up a life of luxury and power to escape an arranged marriage, and only to be met with this.

I had run away to Half Moon Pack and taken on a new identity. I thought that when Aiden chose to marry me as his chosen mate yet my background was unknown, it meant something.

Aiden saved me once, and that was all it took—I fell for him at first sight.

What began as gratitude soon became devotion, and before I knew it, I was hopelessly in love with the man who would one day break me.

One night, during heat—a very uncontrollable state every unmated wolf eventually faces—we lost control and made love.

It wasn’t planned, nor was it intended; it was just pure wolf instinct. But when his father found out, he demanded that Aiden take responsibility.

And so, we were mated out of obligation.

Our child was conceived from that night, a symbol of something I wanted to believe was fate, though deep down, I knew better.

I thought my love could win him over. But his gaze… it never lingered on me. It always followed Haven.

Maybe he saw something in me, a rare occurrence of true love between chosen mates. But to him, I was only a shadow of a person he truly loved.

I put my emotions aside and shoved past the banquet hall doors.

Aiden was just preparing to walk away with Haven, the woman who bore an uncanny resemblance to me. His expression turned to a surprised frown when he saw me.

“What are you doing here?” he asked impatiently

I held back the snappy retort and took a deep sigh. “It's Iris, her condition is much worse. She needs you. She might not…” I fought back a tear

His face only twisted slightly but his form remained calm as he adjusted his cufflinks. He looked at Haven as if asking for a way forward then turned to me.

“Her wish is for you to spend her birthday with her,” I pleaded, my voice almost sobbing. “Please, she thinks the world of you.”

He took a deep breath, as if my words grated his flesh. Then turned back to Haven, his ignorance and indifference made clear.

I stared at him blankly. That was it? No sense of urgency? Almost as if I was forcing him to see our sick daughter.

“Aiden- “

Without even as much as a response, he outright brushed past me as he left, Haven in tow.

I stood there and watched him disappear into the crowd. My chest ached and my wolf screamed inside me.

I hoped that even though our bond was faked then at least our daughter might mean something. That he would have some sort of empathy.

My hand clenched around my phone, and just then, it buzzed.

I wiped my tears quickly and answered. “Hello?”

“Mrs. Barret,” the doctor said urgently, “it’s Iris. She’s taken a turn for the worse. We need you at the hospital immediately. She’s not breathing on her own.”

My blood went cold.

“I’m on my way,” I said, then turned and stumbled outside the hall.

Chapter 2

Daughter's Condition Has Worsened

Rue’s POV

The doctor’s words stung me. They were needles, pricking through the thin skin of hope I had managed to preserve.

“Her condition has worsened,” he said gently, his voice full of practiced sympathy. But to me, his words were like an ultimate judgement.

I didn’t respond as my knees buckled, and I gripped the cold armrest of the waiting room chair to steady myself.

I fumbled with my phone, hands trembling as I dialed Aiden’s number. One ring. Two. Straight to voicemail. I tried again. And again. And again. Still nothing.

Panic and fury tangled in my throat like thorns. Where was he?

Finally, on the fifth try, the line connected.

“Aiden,” I gasped, “it’s Iris—she’s—”

“—Mommy! You said we’d pick the red panda, and the pink one!” a child’s shrill voice giggled through the line.

I froze.

Then came her voice—Haven. Soft, happy and somehow smug? “You can’t have both baby.”

“Aiden! I want the red and pink panda.” The girl’s voice sounded

I didn’t hear his voice. I didn’t have to.

The laughter, the domestic ease, the sound of Haven’s little girl giggling in the background—it was enough.

I hung up.

My hand was shaking so violently that the phone slipped from my grasp and clattered to the floor. The hallway felt like it was closing in on me.

The ceiling lights blurred above me as tears filled my eyes.

He was with them.

Not here. Not at the hospital. Not beside his daughter who might not make it through the night.

He had chosen them.

Before I could gather my breath or dignity, I heard heels clicking against the tile, fast and angry.

Aiden’s mother burst into the corridor, with Sora trailing behind her, hair perfectly curled and lips drawn into a thin line of disdain.

“You!” Aiden’s mother pointed an accusing finger at me as if I were a serial criminal or a threat to national security. “What did you do to my granddaughter? Are you so incompetent you couldn’t even keep her safe?”

“I—” I barely managed a word out before Sora stepped forward and slapped me. Hard.

“You irresponsible little mutt!” she spat.

The sting wasn’t just on my cheek—it was more than the physical pain attached to it, it hurt my sense of dignity and pride.

“You should never have had her,” she continued. “You’re just a pathetic little Omega, clinging to Aiden’s name like it would add to your worth.”

My eyes stung, but not from her slap.

From the rage and pain boiling behind my ribs.

“I raised her alone,” I hissed through my teeth. “While Aiden was out living his glorious life, I was the one who took care of her. I was the one who always sang her to sleep and protected her from danger. Not him. Not you. Me.”

Sora scoffed and folded her arms. “Oh please, spare me the drama. You are the irresponsible parent. None of these would have happened if you had decided to pay more attention to Aiden.”

I stepped forward, my voice steadying like steel. “Aiden wouldn’t even be where he is today if it weren’t for me. I helped him build his important alliances behind closed doors. I helped him clean up his messes, gave him strategies, told him the best ways to negotiate..”

“You? Please,” Sora laughed, rolling her eyes. “Aiden was always destined for greatness. You were just… conveniently there.”

Aiden’s mother gave a mocking smile. “And now you have proved how irrelevant and unimportant you are. At least in Haven we have a real Luna... We don’t need to deal with your drama anymore.”

Something in me cracked.

Real Luna?

“Haven’s family is much more capable?” Aiden’s mother pressed “ And with her abilities, she is a perfect one fitting my son’s status. Iris is done. Should have happened sooner for all I care.”

The casual cruelty in her mom’s voice wasn’t just appalling—it was crushing. Just because Iris was really sick, they had just discarded her like she meant nothing?

“Iris deserved to die. She was always getting sick since birth. She was really a jinx.”

“Don’t you dare,” I said, stepping closer, my wolf seething just beneath my skin. “You're not worthy of judging my daughter.”

Haven’s POV

The moment Aiden’s phone rang, I knew what it was about. His expression said everything before the words even left his lips, Rue.

“I have to go. Something’s happened to my daughter,” he said, his voice clipped with urgency, not even glancing at me as he grabbed his keys.

My stomach twisted in rage. He would drop everything, for that woman and her child. My hands trembled, not with weakness but with fury.

I turned toward my own daughter, sitting quietly by the fireplace, and without hesitation, I bit down on my lip until I tasted blood.

Then, with a trembling hand, I let the vase beside me crash to the ground, the sound sharp.

“Aiden!” I cried, clutching my arm as I pulled my daughter closer, “She fell—she’s bleeding!” Aiden froze, and for a moment, I thought he might stay. But even as he checked the wound, his eyes were far away, already on his way to her.

. “I’ll have the pack doctor look at it,” he muttered, standing again. “I need to go now.”

The moment Aiden opened the gate, a feral rabid wolf lunged, claws tearing through his shoulder, fangs sinking deep. “Aiden!” I screamed, running toward him, as blood soaked through his shirt.

For almost half an hour, he fought it off with brutal strength. After he had fought it off, I figured he’d still linger behind, but even yet, he was still trying to reach his car even as he staggered.

“You’re hurt! You can’t go—let me call the medic!” I begged, clinging to his arm. But his eyes burned with that same unbearable resolve. He was still head-set on going to see Iris at the hospital.

“Let me accompany you atleast,” I said.

He nodded.

And so, despite my disinterest in going to visit Iris, we accompanied him to the hospital. In my mind, I could only think of Rue— it was always Rue. The woman whose very existence tore apart what was meant to be mine.

Ever since my father separated me from my mother all those years ago, I had vowed to return and reclaim whats mine.

And to do that, I had to become the pack’s Luna, no matter what the cost. It was my birthright.

By the time I arrived at the hospital, it was hectic.

Aiden arrived on time just to stop Veronica from striking Rue across the face.

Chapter 3

He Chose Her

Rue’s POV

Aiden’s hand shot out just in time, catching his mother’s wrist before it could connect with my cheek.

“Enough, Mother,” he said sharply. For a fleeting second, I thought maybe he still cared. But then Haven stepped closer, sliding her arm through his with a soft smile.

“Aiden, you shouldn’t get so worked up,” she whispered, resting her head lightly on his shoulder as if they belonged together. The gesture pained my heart. My fingers clenched at my sides, nails biting into my palms.

My daughter had been burning with fever, calling for her father—and he hadn’t come. And now, seeing him standing there with Haven, letting her cling to him, I felt something inside me crumble.

“So you decide to show up, now?” I murmured bitterly, my voice shaking. “She was sick, Aiden. On her birthday.”

He looked at me, guilt flickering behind his eyes. “Rue, it’s not what you think—Haven asked me to accompany her, I didn’t—”

I scoffed “You’d rather accompany her instead of your ailing daughter.” His silence was my answer.

I turned away before the tears could fall, before he could see how much it broke me, and walked toward the lounge on the first floor—anywhere far enough that I could feel at peace.

My feet moved before my brain could catch up, my legs carrying me blindly down the corridor.

The doors slammed behind me, sealing the image of them — a new family, one that had decided I was nothing more than trash to them.

When I left, Iris had been moved to the operating room where the doctors were still working on her.

My heels clicked hollowly against the wooden floor before I sank to my knees beside Iris’s empty bed.

Her little stuffed rabbit, the one she used to carry everywhere, sat forgotten on the corner.

I clutched it to my chest, breathing in the faint scent of her favorite shampoo.

I was already starting to miss her presence, her constant giggles and really bad jokes.

I screamed into the silence.

And then I cried.

My daughter — my only remaining light — was fading, and I had nothing left. No mate. No family. No pack. No power.

I had failed her.

A sharp knock on the door jolted me upright - the doctor stood on the pathway, his face a mixture of different expressions.

He removed his surgeon’s mask and cap, and delivered his verdict.

“Iris’s vitals are dropping fast. She’s... we’re doing all we can, but...” The doctor’s voice was cautious. Distant. “She’s slipping. You should maybe consider taking her to other hospitals, I can refer you to some.”

I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. I wouldn’t even know how to respond to that. So I stood up, heart pounding so loud it drowned everything else out.

The dread of losing my little girl suffocated me, it was unimaginable.

I spent the next hour doing the only thing I could— calling healers, witches, underground shamans. But no one had any clue or an apparent solution to my daughter’s condition. I was almost hopeless.

Then I remembered the words of the doctor. He said only a certain witch could save my daughter, one that could only be accessed by an alpha.

A witch. One powerful enough to heal even at death’s door — but she only served one Pack: my father's.

The Pack I had run from.

The Pack I had discarded from my life without batting an eye.

I dialed the number I hadn’t used in years.

“Hello?” came the gruff, aged voice. Alpha Cyrus. My father.

“It’s me,” I said hoarsely.

A long pause. Then, “Rue.”

“I need help. My daughter—Iris—is dying. There’s a witch in your pack, I know it. Please, Father. Let her help.”

Silence again, heavier than before.

“You have a daughter?” he asked

“Dad, please.” I pleaded, reality hitting me that I had literally cut off my own father, and he didn’t know details of my life.

Another silence ensued. When he spoke, it was cold and controlled.

“You may return. But only on one condition.”

I swallowed. I already knew what he would say.

“You will come back and fulfill the promise you ran from. You will marry the man I chose for you. Only then will the witch see your child.”

My throat closed.

“I’ll do it,” I whispered. “I’ll come home.”

I hung up, my stomach turning as I grabbed my coat and keys. As I pushed the elevator button in the hospital, the doors opened — and there she was.

Haven.

Proud. Smug. Smirking.

“Well, well,” she purred. “In a hurry?”

I stared at her, too tired for venom.

She stepped forward. “You know; I’m going to take him back. I always do.Aiden was mine first, and he will always be mine. Soon I’m going to be Luna, and nothing will stop me.”

I clenched my fists.

“Good for you,” I said, voice brittle. “You can keep him.”

Haven’s eyes narrowed. She opened her mouth to respond—

Then came the explosion.

It suddenly ripped through the corridor, the deafening roar swallowing every scream around us.

The shockwave slammed into me, throwing me hard against the wall as smoke and dust filled the air.

Through the haze, I saw Aiden—his instincts kicking in—rush toward Haven, pulling her into his arms, shielding her as debris rained down. Not me. He didn’t even look my way. The heat of betrayal burned deeper than the sting of the blast itself.

For a heartbeat, I just stood there, my ears ringing, my chest aching from more than just the impact.

So this is what I am to him, I thought bitterly. The woman he vows to protect is not me. And in that single, brutal moment, I made up my mind.

When all this chaos ended, so would our bond.

I would divorce him.

Chapter 4

Sign The Papers

Aiden’s POV

I had just finished checking on Iris when I went to look for Rue.

The air still smelled faintly of antiseptic and smoke when a nurse ran past, shouting that an explosion had gone off in the first-floor restroom.

My heart lurched—Haven had gone that way earlier.

Without a second thought, I sprinted toward the chaos, convinced she was the one trapped inside. Without a second thought, I forced my way through the smoke and debris.

After I had taken Haven out of the smoke, I learned that Rue was in there too.

The world stopped. I tore through the wreckage until I found her, her body half-covered in dust, her breathing faint but steady.

Later, when she woke up, I tried to explain—to tell her that a rabid wolf’s attack had delayed me, that I hadn’t meant to be late.

But she pushed my hand away. Her wounds weren’t severe, the doctors said—but the distance between us had never felt more worlds apart.

Rue’s POV

In the haze of pain and medication, voices drifted through my dreams—soft, indistinct at first, then clearer.

“…Mr. Aiden hasn’t left Miss Haven’s side all night.”

“He carried her himself—refused to let anyone else touch her.”

“She’s lucky. Only a few scratches, but he looked terrified something worse might’ve happened to her. He must love her.”

Their words sliced through my hazy mind. My fingers curled weakly against the sheets. He was with Haven. Even when I was the one who bled, the one who nearly died.

Of course, he’d stay with her. I should’ve known better by now—should’ve stopped expecting anything different.

In my heart, the decision was already made—when I heard those nurses whisper about his care for her, my love for him finally died.

I finally woke up to a white blinding light stabbing my eyes. Almost immediately afterwards, the sterile stench of the hospital filled my nostrils, and a dull ache pulsed where the bullet had ripped through me.

From the bandages, the shrapnels went cleanly through missing my vitals, which was a good thing.

Iris

I lurched upright, biting back a groan. My daughter – was she alive?

“Easy, you’ll tear your stitches.”

It was Aiden’s voice. Plain. Almost detached.

He loomed at the foot of my bed, his presence shadowing most space in the room.

There was only a trace of regret on his face, yet mostly it remained an expression of cold indifference,, one that he had perfected over the years.

I recalled it all – the sudden explosion, his figure shooting towards Haven without batting an eyelid. The look of concern as he rushed to rescue her, his eyes not even anywhere near me.

“Iris, where is she?” I demanded.

“The doctors managed to stabilize her but….” His jaw twitched “it’s only temporary.”

I heaved a simple sigh of relief then ripped out the IV, ignoring the blood beading on my skin. “Where’s my bag?”

Aiden grabbed my wrist.” Stop being reckless. Your stitches are still ripe.”

“So now you are concerned.” I scoffed as I looked around for my bag.

“Stop with the stubbornness and relax.” He said, reaching again for my arm.

Relax? The word slithered under my skin.

He was seriously telling me to relax after parading his new mistress when our own daughter was dying.

When his own family, including him, spite me for my daughter’s critically ill condition. When he purposefully chose her when the explosion ripped through…

Around thirty minutes later, I made my way to the hospital lobby.

After the previous explosion, a couple of law enforcement officers littered the hall, questioning and gathering evidence. In the hushed whispers, I spotted them.

Aiden’s mother, Veronica alongside her daughter, Sora, were perched on the waiting seats like queens holding court. Their eyes snapped to me, expressions frowning in unison.

I didn’t spare them a glance.

I went straight to where Aiden sat and slammed the divorce papers onto the glass table. The sound cracked like ice.

“Sign it.”

Silence.

Almost instantaneously, my wound started throbbing, reminding me of the kind of pressure I was exerting on myself.

Sora spurted out her drink. Veronica’s face froze mid gasp.

Aiden’s gaze dropped to the papers skeptically, then back to me. His eyes assessed me in a calculating manner, as if I was planning something against him.

“What is this?” Aiden’s voice dripped with doubt and suspicion.

“Divorce papers.” I replied, tapping the line where my bold signature already sat.

Sora murmured something towards Veronica. I made the words ‘acting unusual’ and ‘it’s probably a trap,’

Aiden snatched the papers, scanning each clause and page. His nostrils flared. “and you have already signed it.”

Sora snorted. “Please. It’s probably her last ditch attempt. Watch – she’ll beg you to stay by nightfall.”

Veronica leaned in on the conversation, her voice calculated “Aiden, see if it’s a trick.”

My nails bit into my palms, as I held back the anger, bitterness and retort from coming out as tears. They didn’t deserve it.

Aiden’s pen hovered. “Why now?”

“I can’t deal with this…when my daughter is still in her condition.” I replied, my voice staunch. “Sign it.”

A heartbeat. Then his pen scratched—final, dismissive.

“There you have it, let’s see how long you last. I will need the court’s copy by next week,” he said, tossing the pen aside.

“I will have my lawyer handle it.” I tucked my copy into my coat, the paper crisp as a death warrant.

I turned back as I proceeded to the receptionist to retrieve my bag and belongings.

Chapter 5

Unaccustomed To Life Without Her

Rue’s POV

On my way back, Sora’s words made me pause: “She’ll probably refuse to hand over the court documents when the time comes.”

Veronica sighed. “But a divorce? Right now? Something tells me that she has something up her sleeve.”

“Aiden, is a divorce right now serving in your best interest? I mean, can we secure the Blood Claw alliance without…. her.” she continued.

“Mom, she’s just an omega. What does she know.” Sora quipped.

“ Son, I think she’s cunning. That’s all. But I know you are more than capable of joining the Blood Claw league. You will be the first ever wolf to achieve a feat like that.” Veronica replied.

“Its good riddance though. After Rue gave birth to Iris, her figure has been mid. She was starting to become a burden to you.” Sora added.

“Your sister makes a point. But Aiden, I just want to make sure that you don’t regret anything in the future. “Veronica said in a warm undertone.

Aiden’s smirk was a blade. “ Let's see how long she lasts.”

I wondered what Aiden would say if he knew I was the daughter to Blood Claw’s Alpha. In a way, that gave me some sort of joy and confidence.

Let him dream.

When I passed by them on my way upstairs, I turned and told Aiden; “a lawyer will be in contact with you to handle any legal proceedings.”

With that, I left.

Outside Iris' room, I stared through the glass at her, mixed emotions piling over me. It pained me to see her in that situation. She didn’t have to endure such torture.

I dialed my father’s number and told him we will be coming back soon.

Aiden’s POV

After I left the hospital, and with Rue and Iris leaving, I went back home. It took exactly one week, indulged in lots of thinking and stress, before the court documents arrived.

Rue had made it official that she walked out of my life. She was true to her word.

Finalized Divorce Documents.

I stared at the official stamped papers in my hand, longer than I ought to. My wolf, Blue, bristled under my skin uncomfortably.

She didn’t even plead. No last minute calls. Not even a single tear. In a way, that annoyed me more than her disappearance itself.

Under my mother’s advice, I had acted tough towards Rue. I never thought she’d actually follow up with the divorce threat. I expected her to chicken out of it just like my mom had convinced me.

“She actually went through with it,” I muttered under my breath. I tried dialing her number and sending her messages, that she should rethink her decision for the sake of Iris, but I couldn't find her anywhere.

My door burst open and in came Vance, my beta. His eyes shifted uncomfortably towards the brown divorce document screaming for attention, to my face.

“Alpha Aiden, the hospital called. They can’t locate Rue or …. Iris- “

“You came all this way to waste my time with that?” I roughly stuffed the decree inside my desk drawer. “If she chooses to disappear, what does that have to do with me?”

Vance hesitated. “But your daughter—”

“Damnit Vance.” I bared my teeth. “Go look for her then.”

I hated how Rue and Iris stressed me up. I didn’t want to admit it bothered me, because what kind of alpha would that make me?

The door swung again without a knock. This time, Haven waltzed in,

“Our engagement ceremony will be a very big event, second biggest after a wedding. Oh, and the jeweler sent ring designs,” she chirped, draping herself over my chair. “I prefer the emerald. It matches my eyes.”

I barely glanced at the sketches. “Whatever you want.”

Her smile faltered. “You haven’t even looked at them.”

“I’m busy.” I shoved aside reports on Blood Claw Pack—all useless since their alliance with us was still not a possibility.

Haven’s nails dug into my shoulder. “Are you thinking about her?”

Rue’s name in her mouth was like a match on a bunch of dry hay.

“Now you are being ridiculous,” I snarled.

“The Blood Claw Pack is highly secretive and generally does not accept collaborations with outsiders. ” I said.

Haven recoiled, then sniffed. “Instead of trying to phish for their attention, why don’t you ask for an invitation—”

“Like they’d notice us? Half the continent licks their boots. They are highly secretive and never accept collaborations with outsiders, what would make us stand out?”

“Try.” She pouted. “It just might work.”

Well, I had tried everything else. Haven’s suggestion would be my last try before I completely give up.

Three months passed by faster than I hoped for them to. And within that period, the silence was worse than I had expected.

No calls begging for money or assistance. No drunk texts or calls cursing my name. Rue had literally vanished like smoke – and it really bothered me in ways I couldn’t explain.

Don’t get me wrong, I growled to Blue. I don’t miss her.

Even though I thought that, I still checked my phone for the hundredth time today. Not a single message from her. Not even a missed call.

She basically erased herself from my life.

“Vance!” I bellowed.

My Beta skidded in, wary. “Alpha? What’s wrong?”

“Find my daughter.” The order tore out of me before I could stop it. “Go out, and come back with my daughter Iris.”

Vance blinked. “I thought you said—”

“Just do it.”
