Raelyn Beck turns eighteen with five prospective fiances waiting outside her door. She has already become Alpha of the Shadow Pack, passed her trials at sixteen, and expanded its business across the continent. The Salvatore brothers arrive expecting a country Omega who will be lucky to marry one of them.
She lets them keep that impression. In Alpha Raelyn More Than Meets the Eye, Raelyn deliberately suppresses her Alpha aura before returning to honor her late father's marriage arrangement. The first five chapters give her two quite different decisions: how much of her power to reveal, and whether she wants the marriage everyone has gathered to arrange.
A promise made for the child she used to be
Raelyn's father arranged the alliance when she was a sickly child. He feared that his only female heir would be bullied in future struggles between packs and wanted Eclipse Pack's protection for her. Raelyn remembers resisting the idea, but his dying wish is something she cannot bring herself to refuse.
The uncomfortable part is how thoroughly she has outgrown his expectations. She arrives with a wolf, Freya, who calls her Alpha. Her father's concern still has emotional force even though the helpless future he feared no longer describes her life.
That helps explain why simply announcing her rank would not settle everything. It could correct the household's assumptions about her strength. It would leave her attachment to her father's promise untouched.
The suitcase and the bank card
Regina, the brothers' mother, orders the butler to open Raelyn's luggage. When Raelyn refuses, Regina summons four guards. All five sons stay on the couch without helping. Robin, their father and Eclipse Pack's Alpha, arrives and stops the confrontation.
Raelyn has already told Freya that she can handle it. She also privately thinks being thrown out would do her a favor.
Robin's kindness complicates that possibility. He apologizes, threatens banishment for anyone who disrespects her, and later offers her a bank card. Regina treats even Raelyn's refusal of the money as evidence that she is pretending to be above it. Soon afterward, Raelyn's Beta reports quarterly company profits of 382 million.
The profit report shows how badly Regina has misjudged her finances. Raelyn declines the card without using her own wealth to win the argument.
Five brothers, one proposed choice
Robin makes the arrangement explicit in Chapter 5: Raelyn should spend time with each son, decide who suits her best, and then make the engagement official. The opening's references to five fiances describe the candidates before that decision. Robin is asking her to select one of them.
Raelyn agrees aloud while privately resolving to ruin any good impression the brothers have of her. Earlier, she tells her friend Jackson that she does not know whether she will go through with the engagement. She hopes the family's dislike will help her leave sooner.
This is where the promised choice feels narrow. Robin gives her time and treats her warmly, yet his proposal assumes that getting to know his sons will lead to choosing one. Raelyn is still considering whether to participate at all. Her agreement to the visits conceals that resistance just as her Omega disguise conceals her rank.
Aiden notices her before he understands her
Aiden gets the first day, taking Raelyn to his company. By then, he has watched her smash a bottle over a Beta's head after the man ignores her refusals and reaches toward her in a bar. Aiden was preparing to intervene; she acts before he reaches her.
His viewpoint registers curiosity, but he continues thinking of her as an Omega. On their morning drive, he insists that he is cooperating only for his father and will not like her. Raelyn responds by teasing that she likes him best. Against her private plan to discourage the brothers, that answer reads as provocation, not a settled selection.
The pleasure of this opening lies in watching Raelyn handle people who keep misreading her. She can run a pack and defend herself, yet a promise to her father brings her into a household she would rather leave.
